Nifty Linux Applications
Okay, so when we brag about all the neat things Linux can do but other operating systems can't, we can look here. We rely on user participation (that's you, by the way) to continue listing our nifty utilities, tools, and hacks.
Here's the list:
- NetCat — this also runs on windows, by the way.
- Ripping an audio CD with Grip… I've rescued a half dozen disks that were considered
unreadable
by Roxio and Ahead's Nero. It even has scratch compensation! — JeffHendricks
- [cdparanoia http://www.xiph.org/paranoia/] is another good tool to pull data from scratched !CDs. — MischaKrilov
- Reading Compact Flash cards through digital cameras (without card readers). Windows chokes at 16MB. Linux mounted my 128MB card through my camera without flinching. — JeffHendricks
- [otto http://www.cardhouse.com/otto/] is a great MP3 streaming jukebox with built on Perl and !MySQL. JudsonLester is currently adding many features to it, so he's the authority. — MischaKrilov
- [Xfce4 http://www.xfce.org/index.php] – WOW. It's a fast and logical desktop. If you use Debian, apt-get can easily install the binary with all the modules. – cjackson
- [Screen http://www.gnu.org/software/screen/] – Screen is a full-screen window manager that multiplexes a physical terminal between several processes, typically interactive shells. Each virtual terminal provides the functions of the DEC VT100 terminal and, in addition, several control functions from the ANSI X3.64 (ISO 6429) and ISO 2022 standards (e.g., insert/delete line and support for multiple character sets). Great for ssh sessions, pick up right where you left off.
- [IRSSI http://www.irssi.org/about] – Irssi is a terminal based IRC client for UNIX systems. It also supports SILC and ICB protocols via plugins. Perfect for use with Screen, keep your channels with you without skipping a beat.
